Chapter 14

Dark brown eyes leaned in, never leaving Zia’s. He was going to kiss her. Her heart thundered in her ears and heat rushed to every point in her body. She felt his breath on her cheek and her eyes fluttered closed as she waited to feel his lips on hers. She raised a hand, expecting to feel the beard beneath her fingers. But it was not there, only cleanly shaven skin.

Zia bolted upright and threw back the covers. Her eyes slowly adjusting to the dark. She threw her feet over the side of the bed and dropped them to the cold floorboards. The nightmares had decreased since visiting Tiana’s grave a few days prior but having Mr. Dawson replace Tiana was unexpected, albeit not wholly unpleasant.

Zia stood up, but then sank back onto her bed, willing her pulse to slow. This was the first time she had recognized the eyes of the bearded man from her dreams when she had first arrived at Fawnbrooke. Mr. Dawson’s eyes. How had she never realized they were one and the same before?

She had run into the bearded man at the inn, before the accident. It was a wonder after that interaction that he had stopped to help her at all. It also explained why he thought her lying about her title. She had not thought Tiana played the role of a lady very convincingly. But perhaps Zia had been wrong. It was yet another element of her plan that had so fully gone awry.

She pushed back the stray hairs that fell onto her cheeks from her plait. Her face warmed as she thought on the dream she had just awoken from. Mr. Dawson had been leaning in, his purpose no doubt to kiss her, when something had awakened her. She was both disappointed and relieved. How was she to look at Mr. Dawson had she actually allowed the dream kiss to happen? Judging from her rapid pulse and heated flesh, she would surely have let it happen. In her dreams, she reminded herself. It was only a figment of her imagination.

Mr. Dawson had never indicated, nor done anything remotely close to those things he had done in her dreams, which meant it was only her feeling these emotions. He had not even thought her handsome the night they went for dinner at Morley Park.

She ran her fingers over her lips, the tingle of anticipation still there. If only something had not awakened her, she would know what it felt like. But what had awakened her? Was it only the recognition of Mr. Dawson’s deep brown eyes? She grabbed her wrap from the nearby chair and slid her arms through, tying it tightly at her waist.

She walked lightly to her door, listening to see if she could hear anything on the other side. Footsteps sounded, but they were farther away, perhaps downstairs even. Should she light a candle? She looked toward the bedside table, but quickly dismissed the notion. Her eyes had fully adjusted to the darkness.
